AlvinT Gallery, located in the newly established Indonesia Design District, reimagines the traditional furniture store, transforming it into a cultural and collaborative space that bridges relationships between designers, artisans, and stakeholders in the creative industry.
The concept highlights the value of understanding material origins and raising awareness of sustainable and ethical practices, such as the exploration of rattan’s ecosystem and the challenges faced by its industry.
AlvinT Gallery presents the concept of People Place Culture, a philosophy that underscores the inseparable bond between humanity, the environment, and cultural identity that reflects AlvinT’s belief in craft as a living practice deeply tied to people and their surroundings.
We wish to put rattan as a material in a new light. An undervalued material that is indigenous to Indonesia and is an integral part of Indonesia’s culture is rarely displayed in a flattering manner. The explorative use of rattan provides a new way to use material other than the usually woven material.
AlvinT hopes to ignite curiosity through the gallery and provoke conversations about design, culture, and sustainability. It aims to foster meaningful collaborations among designers, artisans, and stakeholders, creating a community that values heritage and innovation.
"With the new AlvinT Gallery, we want to go beyond merely showcasing our products. We aim to ignite curiosity, provoke conversations, and create meaningful connections with our artisans and audience. It's about understanding who we are, where we come from, and how we can shape a better future through design and cultural collaborations. We want to use design as a vehicle to discuss the pressing issues in our surroundings through thematic exhibitions in the gallery. We hope it can encourage a deeper appreciation of Indonesian craftsmanship."
—Alvin Tjitrowirjo, Founder of AlvinT
By promoting a deeper appreciation for Indonesian craftsmanship and using design as a medium to address societal and environmental challenges, the gallery aspires to inspire forward-thinking approaches while preserving cultural values. We also hope to serve as a platform for exploration and education, inviting visitors to engage with materials, techniques, and stories that inspire our work.
