Sayang Sandang, Sayang Alam is an exhibition and campaign organized by Sejauh Mata Memandang, one of the pioneers in Indonesia’s sustainable fashion industry.
Located in one of Jakarta’s newest lifestyle and shopping centers, the exhibition talks about the emergency of textile waste and fashion waste as one of the most significant polluters to Earth. It features videos, photographs, and informational research on climate emergencies, showing rarely seen images of one of the world’s largest landfills—Bantar Gebang, and works by Green Peace Indonesia, Lynxfilms, Davy Linggar, and many more.
While highlighting the destructive impact of the fashion industry, the Sayang Sandang, Sayang Alam Exhibition presented a hopeful proposition, by highlighting everyone’s possible contribution in reducing pollution. And it can all start by attending the exhibition. The installation booths, designed by Felix Tjahyadi, included collecting boxes for visitors to fill with clothes/textile products that are no longer used. Collected clothes that can still be used will be donated, while the rest will be recycled, and given a new chance to live again so that they do not become eternal waste. In collaboration with Pable Indonesia, Sejauh Mata Memandang turned these textile waste backed into yarns that can be used for some of their products. The exhibition is an invitation to look for an alternative for our fashion consumption, a petition for circular fashion.
As part of our contribution to the exhibition, we were invited to design a piece of furniture using unused clothes/textile products in supporting Sejauh Mata Memandang’s campaign to present the potentials new lives of our waste. With the same beliefs and ideals for the future, we came up with our Pandang Bench that was displayed as part of the exhibition.
