Dahan is a series of one-off handcrafted rattan benches designed as a personal response to our concern about the diminishing richness of human experiences in today's throwaway culture.

In an age marked by mass production, our behaviors in both consumption and creation have been significantly shaped. Dahan stands as a deliberate initiative aimed at countering the flood of fast-paced, mass-produced items saturating the market. Each piece is a testament to our connection to nature and the importance of intentionality in our creative pursuits. 

Dahan places great importance on the origins of its materials and the craftsmanship involved. By deeply understanding rattan's growth conditions, durability, and inherent flexibility, Dahan was crafted by incorporating traditional rattan techniques in unconventional ways to enhance the material’s qualities. This knowledge guides the design process, influencing decisions on shape—taking inspiration from tree branches to honor the material's origin, size—purposefully oversized to challenge conventional rattan furniture structures, and the refusal to mass production—prioritizing individuality and quality to ensure that each piece is different and retains a personal touch.

In making Dahan, the choice of locally sourced natural materials—specifically, carefully selected high-quality rattan, stems from a desire to understand their unique attributes and cultural significance—like how rattan holds a crucial role in the local economy and livelihoods of certain villages in Indonesia, being the world's largest producer of rattan. However, it is regrettable that this material is not always properly cultivated, cared for, and valued. By utilizing rattan, a renewable and natural resource, Daham aims to emphasize AlvinT’s commitment to giving this material a ‘new face' and exploring its boundless potential, not only for its future use—to elevate rattan into a material worthy of consideration for various applications but also to uplift those closely involved in its cultivation—local farmers and artisans.
