Jiwa
In a world increasingly driven by commercialization and rapid technological advancements, AlvinT seeks to reconnect with objects' intrinsic value through our latest body of work, Jiwa. The piece, a tribute shelf crafted primarily from rattan, invites us to reexamine the spiritual significance and cultural heritage embedded in everyday objects.
The tribute shelf is made from sustainably sourced rattan from Katingan, Central Kalimantan. The use of rattan—a material often overlooked despite its historical and sustainable significance—symbolizes a return to age-old traditions and a conscious choice to honor the environment. The design is inspired by the terraced ‘punden berundak’, structures found in ancient religious architecture, highlighting the essential role of non-human beings in our lives. The piece is envisioned to be adorned with symbolic objects—such as handmade bowls containing soil, water, and air, or incense to purify the space—each representing the interconnectedness between humanity and the natural world.
Jiwa reminds us of the once-intimate relationship between humans and the environment, urging us to consider how we can reintroduce respect, gratitude, and spirituality into the objects we create and use in our daily lives.
