Lumping

Lumping Rocking Horse is inspired by Kuda Lumping (Lumping Horse), a traditional dance that originated from Java where the dancers ride on a flat horse commonly made out of woven bamboo. It is believed that the dance illustrates the historical war against the Dutch colonial forces, often performed on special occasions and celebrations, such as initiation rites in many traditions but also an everyday part of Javanese culture.

The piece transformed these historical references into modern furniture with light and dynamic silhouettes to maintain a sense of cultural connection. At the same time, the contemporary design and delicate craftsmanship project a forward-looking attitude that is respectful towards local materials and craft.
